Newcastle City Council wants to continue regenerating the area and create a vibrant urban village but the current state of the river, with a large drop to the water and an unsightly exposed bed at low tide, is seen as a disincentive to future development.
Studies in to the options for managing the water environment in the lower Ouseburn Valley were completed in 2001. The preferred option selected was the construction of a tidal barrage and navigation lock at the area under the Glasshouse bridge thus encouraging redevelopment by raising of the water level along the river in the lower Ouseburn Valley and improving the value of the waterway for recreation, including navigation.
The barrage will form a gateway feature for the valley, where redevelopment will be encouraged by the constant high water level, while maintaining the tidal environment in the section of the Ouseburn within the Newcastle Quayside redevelopment area.,/p>

I don't miss much that goes on around here, except for the official opening! :)
The ouseburn used to be packed with all sorts of small boats - often in all states of repair or disuse, but many were obviously well loved and used craft. Every picture now shows the entire ouse deserted, without even a rowing boat, even on the old slips. Can anyone tell me where all the boats have gone?. Are there any plans to dredge the river?. Are there fish now in the river there?.
