The Grade II Listed fire station was officially opened in 1934 as part of a multi-functional, civic building which also included a police station and magistrates court.
Roman numerals above the corner entrance date the building at 1931 but apparently it was built between 1931 and 1933. It features a steel frame construction faced with ashlar Portland Stone on the facades facing onto the streets and brick in the interior courtyard. The upper floor windows are set back between pilasters that span the second and third floors.
The northern portion of the building from the corner back along Market Street is occupied by the police station and the magistrate's courts. Running along Pilgrim Street is the former fire station, with 7 fire engine garages.
In 2021 plans were drawn up to convert the site, which has lain empty since 2005, into high-end hotel with a restaurant, bar, and pavement cafe
