Northumberland Street improvement Works

Work started in December 2023 to provide new paving, seating, trees, greenery, and lighting.

Originally due to be completed by summer 2025, a series of delays have led to an expected completion date of summer 2026. As of March 2026 Newcastle's busiest shopping street still resembles a building site.

The council website states the following... The new designs for the street will not only transform its look and feel but will also address the poor sub-base and quality of pavement that have meant an ongoing need for maintenance and the resulting tarmac patches on the street over the years. As part of the improvement works the tarmac will be removed and the street fully repaved.

That sounds great but it feels like a waste of time if huge lorries are going to continue to use Northumberland Street's pedestrianised path as a road for deliveries early in the mornings. An alternative way to deliver stock to the couple of dozen or so shops needs to be found so that the latest improvements are not a pointless effort. I don't know what, if anything, the council have in mind to end the damage. Surely the council can come up with a scheme that stops the delivery wagons from destroying the surface.

These photos originally started out on my Northumberland Street page but it was becoming to cluttered so I moved them here.

February 2026

The works return in full swing after the recent christmas inspired tidy up. Whatever the reason, two years is too long time to replace a path. All the while Newcastle's main pedestrian thoroughfare resembles a building site.

October 2025

It looks like the areas which will host trees and street furniture have been hurriedly filled with tarmac to enable a safe area for the upcoming Fenwicks Christmas Window reveal.

It looks like the majority of the paths either side of the centre are finished.
