A little short on content right now but I'm sure this page will fill up as the year flies by. You can always check out my Byker (2021 to 2025) and Byker (2005 to 2018) pages for now.

A193 Shields Road bypass, Potts Street underpass art.
A team of acclaimed artists were commissioned by Newcastle City Council to work with the community to make public spaces feel safer, friendly and more welcoming. We could debate the merits of the previous sentence but I think it looks great.
The artists worked with residents of nearby Tom Collins House and young people from The Lighthouse Project to turn the underpasses into spaces that celebrate Byker’s creativity and community spirit.
On Dalton Street Josie Brookes created tiled murals and painted the ceiling while artist and designer Tom Madge added dynamic illustrations to energise the walkway.
For the Potts Street underpass Benji Spence has created art that is full of playful characters and movement.

Roger Street, no 1.
Roger Street, off Heaton Park Road, was the entrance to the old Byker railway station on the Riverside Branch, which ran between Byker and Willington Quay. The station closed in 1954 and the area was a great playground when we were young. Morrisons supermarket took over a lot of the site when it was built and no 1 is the only building left.

Allendale Road, Council depot (ex Newcastle and Gateshead Water Co.).
Originally the site of a former quarry, the Newcastle and Gateshead Water Company built subterranean reservoirs here around 1902-1904. They were demolished in 1967-8 and the offices of the Newcastle and Gateshead Water Company were built on the site. In recent years the water company has vacated the site and some of it has been used as a council depot while most of the site has been largely dormant.
I read somewhere recently that demolition was expected to begin in May 2025 with vague talk from the council about building a SEND school on the site but it's still standing. See my Byker (2021 to 2025) page for many photos taken in April 2025.
