Shieldfield is a small area of Newcastle upon Tyne located just to the east of the City Centre, from which it is separated by the A167(M) Central Motorway. The Sandyford, Heaton, Byker and Manors areas of the city border Shieldfield to the North, East, South East and South.
During the English Civil War, King Charles I was permitted to play golf at Shieldfield whilst he was held prisoner at Newcastle by Parliamentarian forces.
The district largely consists of a council estate, with a few streets of Victorian terraced houses.
Over the last decade, developments have seen a number of Halls of Residence constructed to accommodate students from the nearby Northumbria University, and in 2007 Northumbria University opened its new state of the art 'City Campus East' on the site of the former Warner Brothers cinema.

Biscuit Factory Art Gallery, Stoddart Street.
This former biscuit factory in Shieldfield underwent a conversion into a art gallery and restaurant. This new status has brought attention to the industrial past of the Shieldfield area, which had many factories in the nineteenth century.
The three storey building is stone and brick. The heavily rusticated ground floor has six arched windows in sandstone surrounds, the windows of the upper floors are separated by brick pilasters. On the Stoddart Street frontage the central pilasters rise to support a pediment above a large single plate window.

The Camden Street Slip.
The Camden Street Slip was a simple single entry sliproad junction from the local road network to the Central Motorway A167(M).
However, it was planned to be in this form only temporarily, with the eventual use planned to be as access from the unbuilt Central Motorway East Bypass onto the Central Motorway. In the event, it was used for around 40 years in its temporary form before closure.

Queens Arms, Simpson Terrace.
The Queen’s Arms public house is an impressive corner building in a good location, and remains relatively unspoilt. The pub was established in 1855 by manager Joseph Smith of Manor Brewery. In 1882 it had been sold to John Graham, and remained in the family until 1939. By 1963 the building was the last remaining on Simpson Terrace. Little or no thought from the builders, architects and planners, just designed to fleece the students. Years on from the construction of the flats footpaths remain unfinished and undistinguishable from roads. Horrific.

Harrogate House, Gosforth Street.
This 1897 beer house survived for over a century as a popular local public house, now shops.
The Harrogate House pub was bought by William Beading in 1925 for £4,000. In 1930 it was extended and sold to Robert Deuchar five years later for £10,000. The pub became fully licensed in 1950 and is now in the ownership of Newcastle Breweries. The attractive pillared ground floor front, which was restructured in 1948, is well designed. The upper floors of this three storey mostly brick pub possesses attractive stone window surrounds.
