Monkseaton Metro opened in 1915 to replace the former Whitley Junction station which was situated in what is now Souter Park.
The station features two stained glass artworks, incorporated into the original station canopies. The two works Beach and Shipyards were created by artist Mike Davies. Beach was designed by schoolgirl Rosalind Hurst.
