St Peters Basin

One of the first major redevelopments on the Quayside here in Newcastle St Peter’s Basin is a private enterprise inner-city marina development of the late 1980s and early 1990s developed by Barratt Homes. It is in the Byker ward of the city and is very much an upmarket residential enclave in a previously entirely working-class area of the city.

The approach road to St Peter’s Basin reflects the industrial origins of this riverside area, with a mixture of manufacturing and warehouse land-use still very much evident. Industries on the banks of the Tyne included shipbuilding, glass-making, pottery and engineering. In 1898 the OS map shows the St Peter’s area had brick works, saw mills and landing stages and these sorts of activities were still evident in the 1944 edition. Most would still classify this as an inner-city area in transition from its industrial origins.

This page also features the nearby areas including Glasshouse Street, Bottlehouse Street and St. Lawrence Road.
