Fenwick's Christmas Window

Fenwick’s Christmas Window themes are known for being really eclectic. The first animated window display at the Northumberland Street department store in 1971 saw Camberwick Green come to life. Since then, the inspirations have been wide ranging, from Peter Pan to Alice in Wonderland.

The display for 2022 is Clarice Bean: Think Like an Elf. The story is the brainchild of writer Lauren Child, most famous for her Charlie and Lola stories.

The Fenwick's display, told over eight different windows, trying ‘exceptionordinarily’ hard to save her family’s Christmas and stop the Christmas spirit completely floating away.

Fenwick's Christmas Window 2021

Fenwick Window's Christmas 2021 theme has been unveiled as Shaun the Sheep. Thousands of people from around the world tuned in to Fenwick Newcastle's live stream with viewers from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America.

This was the second year running that the unveiling was held online and the area outside the window on Northumberland Street was cordoned off to prevent the public from gathering due to Covid. However, around 300 people from local schools and charities were invited to attend the unveiling in person.

As the curtain fell from the window, viewers were taken on a journey through the display's seven windows, which features moments from Shaun the Sheep's latest film, The Flight Before Christmas. The Flight Before Christmas story, created in partnership with Aardman, depicts a festive Mossy Bottom Farm where Shaun the Sheep and his flock live.

Shaun the Sheep's seasonal excitement turns to dismay when a farmhouse raid to get a bigger stocking for the flock accidentally leads to Timmy, Shaun's cousin and the only lamb in the flock, going missing. Fenwick window follows Shaun's adventure to get Timmy home before he becomes someone else's present.

Shoppers watched as the curtains were lifted on this year’s Fairy Tale Forest theme. Young patients from the Great North Children’s Hospital helped to reveal the stunning animated exhibition, which features characters including the Sugar Plum Fairy, Hansel and Gretel, Jack Frost, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the Old Toymaker.

And the last photo, for now, is the obligatory Lego Santa Claus.

The Reindeer Express, a train filled with Santa and his little helpers, is this year’s 30ft-long centrepiece. Ferrari sleighs driven by mice, elves frantically wrapping children’s presents and a suitably plump Santa overseeing the whole operation are just some of what makes up the 41st version of the animated displays.

This years window has the strapline "Once Upon a Time - Celebrating 40 years of Fenwicks christmas stories".

All these photos were taken quite early in the morning before it was switched on so forgive me for the odd appearance of my cameras flash reflecting in the windows. Every time that I have passed the window this week during opening hours I've not been able to get near enough to get beter shots due to the sheer number of visitors.

The bustle of Santa’s busy workshop has been brought to life in this year’s Fenwick’s Christmas window display.

A Fenwick spokesman said: “The first scene shows Santa sitting reading by firelight, his last chance to relax before his busiest night of the year, Christmas Eve. Then we see Santa’s elves sifting through the thousands of letters sent by children.”

After 5 or 6 visits to this years display it was finally quiet enough to photograph it. This years theme is a lot more traditional than in recent years.
