There is a large amount of these type of buildings in Newcastle which was down to a certain gentleman by the name of T Dan Smith. T.Dan Smith was known as 'Mr Newcastle' in the 1960s. His vision of the city as 'the Brasilia of the North' is now being re-assessed by a new generation of visionaries. Demolition has begun on Westgate House (Click here), another of his schemes, and the plans are through and funding in place to knock down the library and start again.
Examples of his work can be seen on many different pages on this site although I do try to exclude his work where possible but he did build a lot of buildings next to and almost on top of some of Newcastles finest buildings. He was also responsible for demolishing a handful of fine buildings to make way for his scheme.
