Hello and welcome to my photographs of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England and surrounding areas. You can click on the pictures to see most of them in a minimum 1024 width to use for your desktop if you so wish. I am constantly updating older pages with new photos and adding new pages to this site.

Byker - Bolam Street School Demolition

Half of Bolam St School was demolished a few years ago when the school merged with the old Raby Street School to form Byker Primary School which is on the site of the old Raby Street School.

The remaining half of Bolam Street School was used by the local sea cadets group and the city council for something or other in recent years until it's closure a few months back.

Byker Wall

The Byker Wall is the name given to a long unbroken block of 620 maisonettes in the Byker district of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The block was designed by the notable architect Ralph Erskine assisted by Vernon Gracie, and was built in the mid-1970s. Its Functionalist Romantic styling with textured, complex facades, colourful brick, wood and plastic panels, attention to context and relatively low-rise construction represented a major break with the Brutalist high-rise architectural orthodoxy of the time.

Its innovative and visionary design has earned it many awards notably the Civic Trust Award, the Eternit Award, the Ambrose Congreve Award for Housing (in 1980) and the Veronica Rudge Green Prize for Urban Design from Harvard University. The Wall has also been placed on UNESCO's list of outstanding twentieth century buildings.

In 2003 the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport announced a proposal to award the Byker Estate, of which the Wall forms a part, a Grade II listed rating as an example of outstanding architecture. In 2007 the Estate became a grade II* listed building (grade two star).

Refurbishment of the whole estate was commenced in partnership withYour Homes Newcastle, the social housing arm of Newcastle City Council. The work is being undertaken by Mansell, a division of Balfour Beatty. The work involves careful reinstatement of original features and colour schemes, using modernised materials where possible, while retaining the look and feel of the 1970s design scheme. For example, a new coloured aluminium window frame has been designed to allow for improved security and insulation, without compromising the visual impact of the buildings. The most recent phase of this was due to be completed in June 2008. A bid for PFI funding from the Homes and Community Agency (to the value of £80 million) was sought in June 2009 to fund the project, which was estimated to cost £210 million, but was rejected as it did not meet the criteria.

On March 16th 2005 the architect of the wall died at the age of 91.

Tynemouth - North Tyne Pier and Lighthouse

Located at the end of the River Tyne North Pier Tynemouth Lighthouse was built in 1903.

The lighthouse is operational and is used by ships approaching and entering the River Tyne along with South Shields Lighthouse, Herd Groyne and North Shields Lighthouses.

Gateshead East Cemetery

A handful of photos of the cemetery which opened in 1862.
The cemetery contains war graves of both world wars, all of which are scattered in different parts of the cemetery. The Cross of Sacrifice, built of Stancliffe stone, was erected after the 1914-1918 War and stands inside the cemetery entrance. It commemorates not only the servicemen buried here, but also those buried in Gateshead (Saltwell) Cemetery.

After 5 or 6 visits to this years display it was finally quiet enough to photograph it. This years theme is a lot more traditional than in recent years. See the sidebar for links to previous years displays.

Once again reflections from the shops over the road got in the way slightly but there is'nt a lot I can do about that other than ask the shops over the road to turn their lights off! :)

Derwent Tower (Dunston Rocket)

Derwent Tower (also known as the Dunston Rocket) is a 29-storey residential apartment building in Dunston, Gateshead. Due to the tower block's unusual shape, the building was nick-named the "Dunston Rocket" during construction (even before its official Derwent Tower title) and the name has remained with locals throughout its life.

The tower was designed by the Owen Luder Partnership on behalf of Whickham Council who at the time controlled the Dunston area of Gateshead. The original brief was to design three high-rise blocks of at least 22 storeys, but due to adverse ground conditions on site, the decision was made to build one tower, with the rest of the properties being low-rise blocks of 2 to 5 storeys. Despite the architect's advice against construction of a high-rise building on the site, the council were strongly in favour. Following many consultations and explanatory models of the foundations with specialists, construction of the foundation began in February 1968, and the tower was completed in March 1971.

The construction of the tower was complex because of the very poor ground conditions on the site. The foundations were based on a sunken concrete cassion that was built above ground then sunk over a period of time. Cassion foundations are often found in harbour construction; to find this foundation being used in the 1960s for a local authority tower block was a first, the cassion below the tower was put to use as an underground garage area for residents. The tower itself has a very bold and striking appearance, unlike any other tower block or high rise building in the UK. Derwent Tower is of a Brutalist design and retains lots of design similarities with the Gatesheads "Get Carter car park" also a product of the Owen Luder Partnership. The building houses two-bedroom flats up to the 10th floor, 1 bedroom flats from floor 11 to 29.

The unusual features of Derwent Tower are:

Height (280 feet)
Unusual construction methods
Plan form change between 10th and 11th floor to accommodate building services including two 10,000-gallon water tanks
Flying butresses from the ground, to 5th floor assisting the foundations
Unusual foundations including an underground spiral carpark (closed to residents for many years)
Brutalist Form
Exposed elments of the buildings structure and servics, i.e flying butresses from floor level and exposed water tanks.

Derwent Tower has been in desperate need of refurbishment for many years, making it unpopular with residents and locals alike. The tower has been allowed to fall into its current run-down state by neglect and lack of maintenance. Reports of services breakdowns, lift failures, water supply faults are all common but are unlikley to be a result of the buildings design or construction methods. In 2007 Gateshead Council decided to relocate residents of the Derwent Tower amid health and safety concerns over the already poor and deteriorating services. The block now stands empty and a demolition notice has been served and work on demolishing the tower is expected to begin in early 2010.

The Dunston Rocket is probably best known through its starring role in a Tudor Crisps advert from the 1970's and 1980's in which a paperboy managed to bribe his mate to deliver papers up the tower, even though the lift was broken, with the promise of a 'canny bag o' Tudor'.

Scotswood - Lower Delaval Estate

The Lower Delaval Estate, in Scotswood, was earmarked for demolition seven years ago as part of a regeneration scheme.

The residents have now left but 130 properties remain, as council chiefs continue to try and reach an agreement with the freeholders of the site over service charge arrears.

Robert Miller, now living in Devon, sent me this photo of 1308 Walker Road. He was born there in 1941 and lived there with his family. This photo is of his grandmother standing in the doorway.

Muriel Latour, an ex-pat Geordie, now living in Canada kindly sent these photos of her family that lived in the Spital Tongues area.

Muriel says My grandfather(Tot) had a house on Dunn's Terrace with a byres and farm yard with about 12 or so cows directly across on the other side of the road. It was a dairy farm and he used to graze his cows on the moor and bring them for milking (by hand) up Hunters Road! The dairy was called Stephenson Bros Dairy.
The oldest photos taken, I would guess, date from around 1886 - 1888, as my grandfather is in them as a young boy and he was born in 1876.

The other two are of him and his brother Joe, with one of the dairy cows and one of Joe with the horse and trap that was used to deliver the milk.

Janette Perry sent me ~~two~~ lots of delighful old photos to share with you all. It may take a few days to add them all.

Taken in about 1915. It is of The Globe public House, Railway Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne. My great grandfather Anthony Malia stands on the left with his white apron on. He managed the pub for a while and he and his family lived there until he died in his forties, not long after this photo was taken. He was also a singer in his spare time and performed at the theatre in Newcastle, one of his sons Robert Malia also sang and performed and later became the choir master at St Dominics RC Church, Byker. He was there for some time.

Taken around 1917 this is a photo of Margaret Malia, my grandmother, it was taken just after her father died Anthony Malia(see photo above). The family had to move house and she had to seek work elsewhere. It is in Newcastle, we don't know which pub though, just that it is one of John Reeds. She is second from right.

This is my great grandfathers butchers shop Applebys, at Arthurs Hill, Newcastle. He is in the middle of the picture with a beard. I would love to know who the other people standing next to my great grandfather are, they look like characters.

The name of the hotel over the road is the Hotel Esplanade if anyone can help out with the location. My best guess is the coast somewhere but it's just a guess.

This is Norah Younghusband Appleby my great Aunt, on stage in Newcastle, not a clear photo, she was quite a local celeb in her day.
She is the daughter of the Butcher Appleby from the photo up the page from this one.

This is Robert Malia, my geat Uncle Bobby. He was a keen singer,as was his father, he was Choirmaster at St Dominics Church for many years.

Lemington

Lemington, Bell’s Close and Sugley were adjacent villages which developed in the nineteenth century around the new industries which took advantage of the coal and clay deposits as well as the nearby water transport.

They were all part of the parish of Sugley. In the sixteenth century there was a Lamedon Mill and a Lamedon House and in 1638 the staithes at Lemendon are recorded. There was also a brickyard, tileshed, blacking factory and boatyard at Bell’s Close at this time.

In 1787 the Northumberland Glass Company obtained a lease on some land at Lemington from the Duke of Northumberland and set up four glasshouses. Glass manufacture continued on the site until 1882 when it stopped and the land was leased to Spencer’s Iron Works. Glass making moved to a different site in Lemington.

In 1797 the Tyne Iron Works was established in Lemington 'for the cast iron extracting by the action of fire in large furnaces from ironstone…… to produce everything from an anchor to a needle' but in 1869 it was taken over by John Spencer & Sons and restarted as the Tyne Haematite Iron Company in 1871 using Spanish ore. The furnaces finally closed in 1886 and in 1903 the Newcastle & district Lighting Company erected a power station on the site.

Lemington Staithes and Lemington Point were the termination of many coal wagonways including the Wylam and Wallbottle wagonways. The coal was delivered to the staithes and then dropped into the many waiting Keel boats to take it out to the collier ships anchored in the River Tyne.

In 1876 with the coming of the railways a 'new' Lemington developed 'up the bank' north of the railway line. In the same year the Tyne Commissioners cut a new channel in the river near Blaydon and the entrance to Lemington Loop was cut off and silted up. This area is now called 'The Gut'. Continuous dredging was needed to keep the staithes clear.

By mid nineteenth century Lemington Point was the finishing line for skiff races starting at either the Tyne or Scotswood Bridges. The famous oarsman, Harry Clasper, frequently entered these races.

There was an island at Lemington Point which was locally known as 'Canary Island' during World War I because of the effect cordite had on the skins of the munitions workers. The land was reclaimed after World War II and in 1958 the Anglo Great Lakes Corporation Ltd. Built a plant for the conversion of carbon into graphite for use in the nuclear industry. This was the beginning of the Lemington Industrial Estate.

Holy Saviour Church was originally called Sugley Parish Church when it was built in 1837. It was designed by Benjamin Green and is unusual because it is oriented north-south, rather than east-west, to avoid an unused pit shaft underneath it. The Parish Day School was attached until 1937 when it closed. There were three churches in the area. 1838 a Weslyan Chapel was built by the Keelmen who ferried the stone form Heworth in Gateshead and in 1868 St. George’s Roman Catholic Church was built with an attached school, which is still in use.

On 12 July 1875 Lemington Station opened on the Scotswood, Newburn & Wylam Railway. On 15 September 1958 the station closed to passengers and on 4 January 1960 the station was closed to goods, but the lines weren't lifted until 1992, when the Ever Ready battery factory in Newburn closed.

Lemington Cemetery

I don't really know a lot about this cemetery other than the fact that it opened in 1906.
The cemetery is quite unique in that it has plenty of room for more burials as opposed to most other cemeteries which are rather pushed for space.

Woolsington Village

Woolsington is a small village and civil parish in the north-west of Newcastle based on the southern edge of Newcastle Airport.

The Ouseburn River begins its journey to the Tyne quite near here and it passes through the village.

Woolsington Hall stands at the south-east boundary of Newcastle Airport. The roughly 120 hectare site is bounded largely by agricultural land.

Ouseburn Street Art and Graffiti

The scarab beetle (symbol of Renewal and Endurance), by local artist Topsy Grewlike, is made up of Sage, Baltic, Tyne and Millenium Bridges. All are visible in the background from this position in the Ouseburn Valley.

St John The Baptist Church

St John The Baptist Church, located in the centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne, is one of Newcastle's oldest buildings and is a 12th century Grade 1 listed building.

Some fragments of the original building remain, but the church is mainly medieval. Worthy of note are the 16th century font cover, the Jacobean pulpit and the reredos in the chancel. Amongst the fragments of medieval glass is the earliest known representation of the city’s coat of arms.

The Literary & Philosophical Society

The Society was founded early in 1793 as a ‘conversation club’, with an annual subscription of one guinea. The subjects of the conversations - and the books that supported them - were wide-ranging, but religion and politics were prohibited.

From its outset, the Society had an enterprising, inquisitive and liberal nature: the first women members were admitted by 1804, various groundbreaking demonstrations of new technology took place, such as George Stephenson’s miners’ safety lamp in 1815 and in 1879, when Sir Joseph Wilson Swan demonstrated his electric light bulbs, the Lit and Phil building became the first public building to be so illuminated.

In 1820, The Newcastle upon Tyne Society for the gradual abolition of Slavery in the British Dominions was established at a meeting held in the Society’s rooms.

In 1822 the foundation stone of the current building was laid by the Duke of Sussex, followed by a grand celebration and meal with 35 toasts and 53 speeches; it was finally opened in 1825.

During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the Society became involved in other spheres of activity. Chief amongst these was an active contribution to the University Extension scheme and the establishment of a thriving lecture programme that continues to this day. Over the years it has attracted many eminent speakers; a scan through the list reveals names such as Oscar Wilde, Edith Sitwell, F.R. Leavis, Mary Kingsley, Dorothy Sayers and John Betjeman.

Some of The Society members over the years include John Dobson, William George Armstrong, Thomas Bewick, Neil Tennant and Richard Grainger. For a more comprehensive list see the History of The Lit & Phil.

Adderstone Crescent - Road Resurfacing Blooper

Residents who waited 26 years for their street to be resurfaced were astonished when the council left it looking like this.

The work was undertaken on Adderstone Crescent, Jesmond, Newcastle, and cars were moved off the street so tarmac could be put down.

Stocksfield

Stocksfield is a hamlet in west Northumberland situated on the south bank of the River Tyne about 14 miles (23km) west of Newcastle upon Tyne and 10 miles (16km) east of Hexham. It is part of the ecclesiastical parish of Bywell. My photos of Bywell can be seen here.

The railway came to Stocksfield in the 1830s with the building of the Newcastle to Carlisle railway. This replaced a scheme to build a canal between the two towns.

In 1801 the population was 24 and by 1851 this had hardly altered with only 27 inhabitants. According to the 2001 census Broomley and Stocksfield had a population of 3,039.

I passed through Stocksfield on the 5th leg of my Walking the River Tyne Westwards Project and did'nt have a lot of time to explore it fully but I intend to visit again maybe on the next leg of my River Tyne walk.

The memorial was built in memory of the fallen in World War I and a further plaque was later added to the monument remembering the the victims of World War II.

Blyth South Shore

We stopped off here for fish and chips on a day out recently and they were delightful.

Bywell

Bywell, a village in Northumberland, is situated on the north bank of the River Tyne opposite Stocksfield, between Hexham and Newcastle.

It is a picturesque village notable for it's two churches, Bywell Castle and Bywell Hall. The latter 2 are both privately owned and in their own grounds so there are no photos of them on this page.

St Andrews Church

St Andrews consists of a fine tower of the Anglo Saxon period, considered to be the best in the county — 55 feet (17m) high and about 15 square feet (1.4m2). Part of a cross is another reminder of the early period, when the church then had narrow nave, chancel and apse. It was very much enlarged in the thirteenth century in a time of local prosperity. In the nineteenth century it was extensively restored, and a lot of medieval grave covers were built into the walls of the church very attractively

St Andrews Church is now redundant to requirements and is preserved as part of our heritage.

St Peters Church

The Church of St Peter has a square medieval tower and was extended in the thirteenth century. A close examination of the stonework will reveal features of the Saxon period, and there is evidence of more extensive buildings. The north chantry or chapel was for many years used as a school. Bywell Bridge

Bywell Bridge was opened in 1838 and was built by T W Beaumont and designed by George Basevi.

Cherryburn

Cherryburn is a cottage in Mickley, Northumberland, England, which was the birthplace of Thomas Bewick, an English wood engraver and ornithologist. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1991 and is now open to the public.
I called in on my Ovingham to Bywell walk, which was part 5 of my Walking the River Tyne Westwards Project, and it was shut for the day so I was restricted to photos of the outside. One day I will make it back for a proper visit.

The Discovering Bewick project aims to make accessible works by the eighteenth century wood-engraver Thomas Bewick which are held in collections at the Laing Art Gallery and City Library (Pease Collection) in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
