Thanks for all the great pictures on the site!
I've been living in the USA for the last 5 years and can't believe all the changes that have been made to the city.

You are most welcome.
Some of the wifes family live in York now and they come back 3 or 4 times a year and they are always amazed by the changes currently happening.
Any chance of some new pics of the lastest construction stage?

No problem and thanks. :)
I was a student in Newcastle when the now demolished Central library was opened. I can tell you how pleased we were to have a modern library and all its facilites to use. Sad to see its gone.
The current fashion in Newcastle is to demolish everything that was built in the 60's which I don't mind. I just hope they don't replace them with equally awful buildings like most of the newer buildings on the Quayside.
Thanks for the photos. I'd no idea the library I loved using had bitten the dust. It did work as a library. I now use Edinburgh University Library which was also by Basil Spence. The university are having it redeveloped. Perhaps a more imaginative solution? See http://www.basilspence.org.uk/learning/buildings/edinburgh-university-library and http://www.is.ed.ac.uk/mlrp/index.html
They do look rather similar in design. I reckon a refurbishment might have worked but as I say it has become all the rage to flatten everyting built in the 1960's at the moment here in Newcastle.
It's due to open soon so I'll grab some photos of the inside in the coming weeks.
